Tesco sales increase in autumn

Published:  23 July, 2008

Rising UK sales and a strong international performance have seen Tesco progress in the third quarter.

Group sales were up 11.8% in the thirteen weeks ending November 24 2007 - a 2.6% increase on first half sales figures.

UK sales increased by 7.6% during the period while international sales figures jumped by 25.7%.

Terry Leahy, Tesco Chief Executive, said: "We've maintained pleasing progress during the third quarter across the group.

"Overall sales growth has strengthened in the period, with International delivering a particularly strong performance, and the UK has again done well, with good growth in our core food categories."

Strong international performance was spearheaded by 29% sales growth in Asia. Tesco has also experienced rapid growth in its Central European markets.

The company's Fresh & Easy store venture in the US had been well received by the market, Leahy added.

Tesco said its substantial programme of new store openings through 2007 meant seven million square feet of new selling space would be introduced to the international market.
