Greenhouse gas protocol released by wine bodies

Published:  23 July, 2008

A partnership between some of the world's major wine producing regions - led by the Wine Institute - will see the implementation of a new greenhouse gas accounting protocol.

The Wine Institute of California, New Zealand Winegrowers, South Africa's Integrated Production of Wine program, and the Winemakers' Federation of Australia will all launch the new initiative shortly.

It aims to provide a free, wine industry specific, greenhouse gas (GHG) protocol and calculator that will measure the carbon footprints of winery and vineyard operations of all sizes.

Robert Koch, Wine Institute president, said: "The International Wine Industry Greenhouse Gas Accounting Protocol is a natural complement to the California wine industry's commitment to environmental stewardship and leadership in sustainable winegrowing.

"Our wineries, the majority of which are family owned, believe that tools such as this are important to the long-term viability and health of their businesses."
