Britons outdrink Russians

Published:  23 July, 2008

The British drink more heavily than the Russians, according to new statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Alcohol consumption per head is greater in the UK than in Russia, while England is the worst performer in terms of teenage and child drunkenness.

The WHO figures show that the average person in Britain drinks 9.29 litres of pure alcohol each year, while the figure in Russia is 8.87 litres.

But despite the figures, Britain does not make the top 10 of drinking nations, coming in at 16th. That honour belongs to Luxembourg, followed by the Czech Republic, Estonia and Germany.
