Australian trade agreement will not benefit wine industry

Published:  23 July, 2008

The recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed by Australia and Chile will not benefit the wine industry, says one industry figure.

From the beginning of 2009, the FTA will stop tariffs on Chilean imports and Australian exports to the South American country.

But Andreas Clark, the trade manager for the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, told ABC News the deal will benefit neither country.

Instead, he said the focus should be on gaining free trade agreements with Asian countries such as South Korea.

"Our focus is indeed on the FTAs with the Asian countries, that's where we can see potential significant gains for Australian wine exporters," he concluded.
