The Marchese Nicol Incisa della Rocchetta, owner of legendary Super Tuscan' Bolgheri Sassicaia, has bemoaned the success of Merlot in Robert Parker and Wine Spectator tastings. The marchese was speaking at a tutored tasting of his wines at the Vineyard at Stockcross on 10 May. Describing Sassicaia as possibly the first garage wine', he said that in a recent Wine Spectator top ten of Tuscan wines, eight were Merlots and one a Sangiovese. Cabernet needs more time to show,' he said. Parker and Wine Spectator are tasting 300 wines a day and Cabernet needs more attention.' The current blend of Sassicaia is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. Guests tasted the 1994, 1996 and 1997 Sassicaia with a six-course meal created by Vineyard chef John Campbell.
