REMY PANNIER: 300,000 LITRES OF WINE FLUSHED DOWN THE THOUET

Over the weekend of 1-2 June, the Loire ngociant Rmy Pannier was a victim of sabotage at its premises at Chac, close to Saumur. Between midday Saturday, when the workers clocked off, and 5am on Monday 3 June, when the first staff arrived to start the week, 300,000 litres of wine was poured down the drain and into the nearby River Thouet. Thirteen vats, containing wine awaiting bottling, were emptied. Red, white and ros was lost, including some for future shipment to the UK. This is a hard blow for Rmy Pannier,' said director Michel Boullaire. Much of the wine we can re-source, but the domaine wines and those from Pouilly cannot be replaced. However, this sabotage will not deflect us from rebuilding Rmy Pannier.' A police investigation is underway, though it is already assumed that whoever emptied the tanks had a grudge against the company. Last year, Rmy Pannier was bought by five of the co-operatives in Alliance Loire. The company's accounts have been in the red since 2000.
