The recently launched Pub in the Park initiative has received the support and backing of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

The endorsement by the DCMS follows the huge support registered by the industry's trade associations, the major pub operators and drinks companies.

The Pub in the Park festival will be the showcase for all that is "good and great" within the pub and bar sector. Commencing with a series of competitions that will take place in pubs and bars across the country from November 2008, the event in 2009 will host the finals of a multitude of competitions including football, darts, pool, bowls, karaoke, live performances and music.

Home Office Minister Gerry Sutcliffe MP said: "People's leisure habits have changed and pubs have been the first to feel the effects of those changes. I still believe that pubs can play a hugely important role at the heart of our communities but they need to provide the right sort of environment and services that will keep customers coming through the door.

"Pub In The Park seems to have the right idea: a focus on good food, quality drinks, great bar staff, quality entertainment and community activities is the right approach if pubs are going to stay relevant to the communities they serve."

Marstons, who operate 500 bars across the country have also announced their support.

Managing director Derek Andrew said: "Our entire strategy is built around delivering a warm, friendly experience for the communities we serve. We fully support the Pub in the Park initiative, which can only help to raise awareness of the positive role pubs play in serving their local area."
