Study calls for ban on alcohol advertising

Alcohol advertising should be banned in order to combat binge-drinking, according to experts.

A study by the University of California has concluded that alcohol should be subject to a "framework convention" similar to that given to tobacco.

Higher taxes, an end to cheap drink promotions in supermarkets and health warnings on labels should all be introduced, according to the findings of the study.

Professor Laura Schmidt, who led the study, told the British Medical Journal that "to counterbalance the globalisation of the alcohol trade, we need international agreements that protect public health."

Experts estimate there are about 22,000 premature deaths every year in Britain related to alcohol, aside from drink-related criminal deaths.
