South African wine brand FirstCape, sponsor of the British & Irish Lions, is to help refurbish a school in its native country as part of its Lions legacy project.

FirstCape will lay a new rugby pitch at Simondium School, located close to its own winery, and help with the maintenance and upkeep in the longer term.

The completed facilities will be officially opened by The Lions when they are hosted by the school on June 12 next year.

Greg Wilkins, a UK director of FirstCape, stated, "We committed ourselves to creating a post-Lions footprint in the South African community when we became proud Sponsors of the British & Irish Lions earlier this year.

"To be able to offer this to our local school in Simondium is simply fantastic and to have The Lions hosted within the community to open the new facilities will be an extremely special moment for FirstCape.

Simondium School edcuates 840 children and is supported by 25 members of staff, only 8 of whom are teachers. The sports facilities at the school are in urgent need of repair.
