Campaign to fight campus alcohol abuse

Published:  16 April, 2009

A programme involving retailers, parents and law enforcement agencies has been launched to tackle under-age and problem drinking on American college campuses.

The Be Wise campaign is being run by the International Institute for Alcohol Awareness and backed by Beam Global, which is funding an online best practices toolkit for members of the community wanting to address alcohol abuse issues.

IIAA president Jim Copple said: "Community-based solutions are essential if we are to successfully address under-age and problem drinking on campus.

"It is only through integrated and innovative partnerships like Be Wise that communities, law enforcement officials, public health experts, parents, students and retailers can work in partnership to achieve a safer environment.

"While we sometimes find ourselves on the opposite side of issues with alcohol companies, we found a willing partner in the fight against under-age drinking in Beam Global.

"Strategic partnerships are essential if we are to make headway in the battle."
