JEFFORD SACKED BY EVENING STANDARD

Published:  23 July, 2008

Andrew Jefford has been told by the Evening Standard that the paper will not commission any more of his wine columns. Jefford told Harpers: Since the new editor, Veronica Wadley, came in, the newspaper has shown very little interest in the subject. I think it's sad that a relatively serious newspaper can devote a whole page to the school run, but can't find any space for serious drinks coverage.' Jefford has been a full-time writer with the Evening Standard for the last ten years. There are no plans to replace him. In another development at the London evening paper, ES magazine will cease to include restaurant reviews, with effect from September. Nick Foulkes and Kate Spicer lose their restaurant review page, but Charles Campion and Fay Maschler remain. Andrew Jefford's latest book, The New France, is published by Mitchell Beazley on 17 October.
