A parent-pupil questionnaire which sampled 2,400 pupils found that 60 per cent of parents have one conversation with their children about alcohol.

Around 57 per cent of children got alcohol from their parents and 49 per cent of 16-17 year-olds surveyed by the Drinkaware Trust said they had seen their parents drunk.

In response a new alcohol awareness guide is being rolled out to schools across the UK. The guide was developed by AIM-Alcohol in Moderation.

The pack, which also includes an 18-page guide for parents, a booklet for them to give to their teenagers, a website and video materials, is aimed at 11 to 16-year-olds.

Teachers, governors and parents were involved in the development of the pack, which includes tips on avoiding peer pressure and advice on how parents can speak to children about alcohol.

The idea for the pack follows The National Institute of Clinical Excellence recommendation that provision should be for alcohol education to be made compulsory in schools via personal, social, health and economic education lessons.

Alcohol education has been subject to OFSTED school inspections since September 2009.

The pack is supported by the industry including Constellation Europe.
