Superstar cricketer Shane Warne has launched his own wine brand, joining golfer Greg Norman and performer Olivia Newton John as the latest Australian celebrity vigneron. The Shane Warne Collection - a 2002 Chardonnay and a 2002 blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot - was produced by three-year-old Zilzie Wines, whose huge, 20,000 ton winery is located in the Sunraysia region, near Lindemans' Karadoc, where Bin 65 Chardonnay is produced. Only 5,000 cases of each Shane Warne wine were made, and while most will be swallowed in an instant by the domestic market, 500 cases have been earmarked for a tentative push into cricket-loving export markets such as India and, of course, the UK. The export push will begin around the Australia Day tastings early next year, and if there is strong interest, sales will begin in earnest from the 2003 vintage onwards.
