Front of house staff can learn about customer service skills and how to become a sommelier at a new one-day wine service course on offer through WSET.

The Wine & Spirit Education Trust course aims to prepare candidates for their first job in hospitality by providing a foundation in basic skills required by all wine service staff and sommeliers.

A spokesman for the WSET said the Level 1 Award in Wine Service, which will be launched on October 4 at the London Wine & Spirit School, will "build on the knowledge and skills developed in the WSET Foundation Certificate in Wines, and show how these can be used in the workplace".

The course is also suitable for people already employed in the hospitality industry who wish to be introduced in a structured way to wine service in a restaurant setting.

The course covers an introduction to sommellerie, where students will learn about career paths available within wine service. They will also learn how to improve their customer service skills.

The qualification will also focus on how to handle wine service equipment and glassware, and how to serve wines effectively.

The course takes place over one day, and is assessed through role plays. All candidates who pass receive a certificate and lapel pin.
