A boardroom shake-up at Wetherspoons saw two directors step down from the 784-strong managed pub chain yesterday.

Keith Down, finance director and company secretary and Paul Harbottle, chief operating officer will be leaving the company "in due course".

In the meantime John Hutson, chief executive, will take on Harbottle's responsibilities while deputy finance director Kirk Davis will handle Down's role.

JDW chairman Tim Martin said: "The Board would like to thank Keith and Paul for their hard work and contribution to JD Wetherspoon over recent years. We wish them well in their future careers."

Rumours that the pair were to join Stonegate Pub Company, which has recently bought 333 pubs from Mitchells & Butlers, have been denied.

JDW, which is currently performing well despite tough trading conditions, saw shares fall by 17p (4%) on yesterday's news.
