Harpers Wine & Spirit has just launched a new way for independents in the UK on and off trades to secure great special wine deals on social network Twitter ? here's our guide to getting involved.

Harpers social media expert Bernadette Costello, has this advice for participants:

How to trade on #winedealfriday

  • Make your Twitter offer bold and exclusive to #winedealfriday, because retailers see great deals every day and will need to be tempted
  • Direct retailers to a page on your website that gives them more details, plus terms and conditions. Or put your contact number on the tweet
  • Your tweet must be written in 140 characters or less
  • Just type in #winedealfriday to search for offers (on a Mac just hold down the Alt key and 3 at the same time to get a #)
  • If you follow each other on Twitter you can then take the conversation offline through DMs (direct messages) and close the deal.

How to read a #winedealfriday

Found a #winedealfriday deal but don't understand the tweet? Here's an example:

@wineproducer Order 30 cases of [wine brand] on #winedealfriday and receive 3 free cases [18 bottles] free. http://bit.ly/cB39KQ Pls RT

What it means in English:

  • @wineproducer is the UK importer offering you the deal

  • http://bit.ly/cB39KQ is a shortened version of the producer's website address (or blog or PDF domain) where you will find more details of their offer.
  • To get a smaller url just visit bit.ly and type in the url you want to shorten
  • Pls RT ? If you think your Twitter followers might benefit from this offer then please retweet it. But you can only retweet this if you have a Twitter account.
