Majestic has buoyant Christmas

Published:  07 January, 2011

Majestic wine had a buoyant festive season, with sales up 6.4% for the nine weeks of Christmas trading.

Chief executive Steve Lewis revealed the group will increase the rate of new store openings, buoyed by a 3.7% increase in like for like sales over the festive period, despite the heavy snow which saw sales plummet by 50% on the firm's busiest day.

Lewis guessed the inclement weather had dented sales by 2% overall, while other retailers complained of a 5% fall-off.

Lewis said: "We are very pleased with our sales growth over the Christmas period. I would like to thank our loyal customers for battling through December's dreadful weather conditions to purchase their wine from Majestic."

Lewis said the business would open 12 stores in its next financial year in addition to the 12 it already had planned to open by its March year end.
