Banknote technology to counter counterfeiters

Published:  23 July, 2008

Rioja Trustseal thwarts crooks

A security device, using technology developed for banknotes, has been used on back labels of 1998 Crianza wines from Rioja and the young wines of the 2000 harvest to thwart counterfeiters. The Rioja Trustseal comprises a small metallic-looking strip depicting parts of the logo and the word "Rioja". The system is widely used on European banknotes. The Consejo Regulador of the DOC Rioja appellation believes that due to the glossy sheen, the sharply defined edges and the optical effects, the consumer will be able to spot that the label is genuine. From 2001 the security device will be put on 1995 and 1997 Reservas and Gran Reservas. The Consejo Regulador says that it will be promoting the new label with the slogan "Inimitable" to reinforce the image of Riojan wines.
