Veuve Clicquot to donate extra lots to shipwreck auction

Published:  01 June, 2011

Veuve Clicquot is to donate an additional 15 lots of rare Champagne to be auctioned alongside the bottles recovered last year from a 19th century shipwreck.

The auction on June 3, will feature two single bottles of the shipwrecked Champagne, from Veuve Clicquot and Juglar that date back to the early 1840s and were found in 2010 off the Åland Islands of Finland

In addition, the Champagne house, that has become the exclusive partner to the Government of Åland, will also provide several rare vintages of Champagne from its personal cellar to be auctioned with proceeds donated to charitable causes at the government's discretion.

Auctioneers, Acker Merrall & Condit, have set a minimum price of 10,000 euros set for each of the shipwrecked lots.

John Kapon, chief executive officer of Acker Merrall & Condit, said: "These salvaged bottles are more than just bottles of Champagne, they are pieces of history. With the additional vintages from Veuve's rare cellar collections, this promises to be one of the most important and exhilarating events in the history of Champagne."
