Harpers Global Design Awards
The first Harpers Global Design Awards to recognise excellence in wine and spirits label and bottle design saw 62 medals awarded, including 17 gold medals for designs the judges felt were showing the way for the rest of the industry.
This year's competition was the first time it had been opened up to entries from anywhere in the world, providing the designs were for products currently on sale and in wide distribution. The competition received entries from right across the globe with a number coming in from the United States, Australia and across Europe including France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Switzerland.
The bulk of the competition was played out between products on sale in the UK market.
The judges were able to award a gold, silver or bronze medal for every product entered with some categories picking up a number of medals, including a raft of golds.
The overall leading agency proved once again to be Stranger & Stranger that won a number of gold medals right across the wine and the main wine and spirits categories. There were also strong performances from UK design agency, dare! and the Australian agency, The Collective, which is due to open a London office.
Richard Siddle, editor of Harpers Wine & Spirit, said of the overall standard of entries: "It has been noticeable travelling around the major international wine and spirits shows over the last 18 months the step change there has been in label and format design. This was reflected in the breadth and diversity of the entries we received, with some brave, and exciting new designs, best reflected in our gold medal winners. The competition to stand out on shelf, or from a page of a website, are greater than ever before, and it is great to see such a standard of entries, not only from the UK, but around the world."
