Mitchells & Butlers sees festive sales up 2.6%

Bar and restaurant operator Mitchells & Butlers has reported strong Christmas trading, like for like sales up 2.6%.

The group, which owns All Bar One and Browns as part of its 1,600 strong chain of outlets, sold 6.9 million meals in the 17 weeks to January 25, 2014, including 193,000 Christmas dinners on the day itself.

Food volumes over the period were up by 1.3%. M&B says year to date like for like saled are up 2%, helped by the strong festive trading and milder weather.

The operator has opened 10 new sites so far this financial year, including four it acquired from Convivial London Pubs. Its investment into new pub systems is on schedule, with so far 400 now installed.

Alistair Darby, chief executive, said: "We have delivered a strong trading performance over our busiest time of the year, with good sales growth. I was delighted that almost  200,000 people shared their Christmas Day with us and would like to thank the 18,000 staff who worked with such enthusiasm to provide them with a great experience.

"We are reducing staff turnover, modernising our systems, increasing guest satisfaction and delivering against our transformation plan to create sustainable value for shareholders."

M&B also operates the Harvester, Toby Carvery, Country Pubs, Sizzling Pubs, Crown Carveries, Oak Tree Pubs, Miller & Carter, Castle, Alex, Nicholson's, O'Neill's and Ember Inns brands.
