Mornington Peninsula wineries make waves with London walkabout tasting

Twelve winemakers from Australia’s Mornington Peninsula are to offer a one-day masterclass and walkabout tasting of their wines in London.

The tasting, which takes place on May 10, offers a rare opportunity to explore the premium cool-climate wines from the region.

Only 900ha of land is under vine in the peninsula, which has been producing wines for over 40 years.

Situated on south-east of Melbourne in the Victoria coastal region, the peninsula has an extreme maritime climate which is perfectly adapted for the growth of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The tasting, which is titled Making Waves, will begin with an invitation-only comparative masterclass led by Matthew Jukes exploring the region’s range of Pinot Noirs.

Each of the winemakers will present wines from the 2010 vintage alongside a single vineyard or block wine enabling those attending to appreciate the varied characteristics of each winery’s production.

The afternoon session will see the winemakers offering over 50 of their wines to taste.

Lindsay McCall of Paringa Estate said: “The Mornington Peninsula is one of the most interesting wine regions in Australia. It is small only 900 hectares planted) and is intensely focused on consistently high quality exciting wines.

“With well over 50 per cent of the plantings being Pinot Noir, our focus is on understanding everything about Pinot Noir from the ground up, from ancient soils to geoclimatic positioning.

“This has led to highly successful and interesting wines that are globally recognised today as some of the world’s finest Pinot Noir.

“We are incredibly excited to be showcasing this fantastic selection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in London this May.”

Other wineries present at the tasting will be Crittenden Estate, Kooyong/Port Phillip Estate, Moorooduc Estate, Nazaaray Estate Winery, Ocean Eight, Quealy Winemakers, Scorpo Wines, Stonier Wines, Ten Minutes by Tractor, Willow Creek Vineyard, and Yabby Lake Vineyard.

The Making Waves tasting takes place in the Downer Room and Exhibition Hall at Australia House, in London.

The masterclass will take place between 10am and 12.30pm followed by the walkabout regional tasting between 1.30pm and 5.00pm.
