Bibendum, Majestic, Sainsbury's, The Sampler, Tanner's, Jose Pizarro and Pollen Street Social were some of the big name winners at last night's inaugural Harpers Awards.

The event, held in conjunction with the London International Wine Fair, and hosted by BBC Radio 2's Nigel Barden, took place at London's Honourable Artillery Company and attracted leading figures from across the UK's on and off-trade and world of wine and spirits.

Awards were handed out in three key sections: The Top Merchants awards, for independent wine merchants; the At Your Service, covering restaurants, bars, pubs and hotels in the on-trade; and the Industry Awards open to drinks suppliers, multiple retailers and high street specialists.

Sainsbury's was named Multiple/Specialist Retailer of the Year whilst the major Top Merchant awards went to the Sampler, for Best Independent Wine Merchant (up to three stores), and Tanner's for Best Independent Wine Merchant (over three stores).

Bibendum picked up two awards: The coveted Best Overall Supplier/Distributor award; and Responsible/Sustainable Business of the Year.

Michael Saunders, managing director for Bibendum, won Harpers first Special Achievement award for the impact Bibendum has had in changing the face of the traditional wine supplier and for the honour in being the official wine and Champagne supplier for the London Olympics.

Majestic were found to have the Best Digital/Social Media strategy and it also picked up the Engaging the Consumer category.

Hatch Mansfield was named Best Distributor/ Supplier to Independents voted for by a nationwide poll of wine merchants. The Oxford Wine Company picked up the Best Top Merchant Wholesaler of the Year and Best Top Merchant Customer Service awards.

Vagabond Wines was named Best Emerging/New Drinks Business of the Year.

In the At Your Service awards Pollen Street Social was named Launch of the Year, whilst 28-50 Wine Workshop & Kitchen was named Restaurant of the Year, Vinoteca, Marylebone won Bar of the Year and TerraVina, Hotel of the Year.
