The winners of the first Wines of Germany on and off-trade promotional competition – 31 Days of German Riesling – have been announced.

The winning restaurant is the Kensington Wine Rooms, the winning retailer is Mill Hill Wines, and the Jugged Hare and the Oxford Wine Company were runners up.

The competition ran through the month of July, with 46 wine bars, gastropubs, restaurants and independent retailers taking part, promoting German Riesling through as many as 60 wine tastings, as well as dinners and special offers, in a bid to increase consumer awareness of the grape variety.

Monika Reule, chief executive of the German Wine Institute, said: "German Riesling should be a natural choice for consumers these days, given its naturally lower alcohol levels and light, refreshing, food-friendly styles.

"Both retailers and restaurants demonstrated an incredible amount of initiative to spread the word about German Riesling during the 31 days and we are confident now more than ever that UK consumers are ready to get tasting German wine."

The winning prize is an all-expenses-paid trip to Germany and £500 towards new German wine listings for runners up.
