The Benevolent receives healthy donation from Vintners

The wine and spirit trades' charity, The Benevolent, has received a cheque for £9,000 from the master of the Worshipful Company of Vintners following the New Year wine trade lunch at Vintners' Hall in January.

Michael Cox, the master of the Worshipful Company of Vintners, handed over the cheque to Chris Porter, the newly elected chairman of The Benevolent, on the back of a key anniversary charity dinner.

The Vintners' Company is one of the City of London's oldest livery companies and 2013 sees the 650th anniversary of the granting of its first Royal Charter in 1363. One of the ways it decided to mark the anniversary was to reinvigorate the annual New Year lunch for senior members of the wine trade in a bid to raise some much-needed funds for The Benevolent..

The historic Vintners' Hall hosted a full house of 120 people who enjoyed fine wines from the Vintners' cellars and a keynote speech from John Pienaar, the BBC's political correspondent.
