Cockburn's has regained its number one status as the UK's biggest Port brand according to the latest Nielsen statistics released by brand owner Symingtons.
It points to Nielsen MAT volume figures to January 7 that show Cockburn's now has a 26.9% market share of branded Port in the UK thanks to an incease in volumes of 32%.
Symingtons said the results are particuarly pleasing as they are driven by a category wide increase in premium branded Port sales with Cockburn's Special Reserve up 43% over the last 12 months taking a 15.9% of the UK's branded Port market.
The figures also show that Port is the only part of the fortified market in growth up 2% MAT by volume and 5% MAT in value. The Port Wine Insititute said there was a 6% increase in total Port shipped to the UK in 2012, with sales of premium Port to the UK up 19% in 2012 accounting for 59% of all UK Port shipments.
"We believe that Cockburn's will continue to grow in the UK, because it is such a well-loved brand," said Paul Symington. "Quality, authenticity and respect for what Cockburn's stood for, is our goal. The quality of the wine is our first and top priority, and we are delighted that the consumer and the wine trade have reacted so well to this straightforward approach."
