Recent listings with Booker, Nisa and Bestway/Batleys have more than doubled sales of South African wine brand FirstCape in the impulse sector of the take-home drinks market, according to Nielsen data.

FirstCape was up 51% in the off-trade overall and is growing at 109% in the impulse and convenience sector.

The brand is the first-ever official wine sponsor of the British & Irish Lions rugby union team that is touring South Africa from next May.

Former British Lions Rugby star Tim Stimpson, who kicked more than 100 points on the Lions' last successful tour of South Africa in 1997, is pictured with Marcus Freer (left) and Peter Butler (right), of SHS Sales & Marketing, the brand's sales team in the impulse and convenience channel.

Butler said: "The FirstCape portfolio has really soared in the off-trade and as the countdown to the Lions' tour gathers momentum, we expect further interest from trade and consumers to follow."
