IMW elects first non-UK chairman |

The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) has elected the first non-UK chairman in its 55 year history. It has appointed Austrian Dr Josef Schuller, who is the director of the Austrian Wine Academy, to the role. Schuller takes the reins from Joanna Locke, who held the position for two years. Schuller was elected at the IMW's annual general meeting in London on September 11. He will be supported by the Institute's new vice chairman, Lynne Sherriff MW, a London-based South African native and a long-time lecturer at the Austrian Wine Academy. "I am, like the Wine Academy, a child of Austria," said Schuller. "We are wine prodigies of the last 20 years. And my greatest wish would be to soon welcome many graduates of the Wine Academy as new members of the Institute." Earlier this month, the IMW announced the addition of 15 new Masters of Wine, including for the first time candidates from Hong Kong, Japan, Spain and Brazil. It said that this year's passes demonstrate its "growing internationalisation", with candidates from the UK, USA, Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland also obtaining the qualification. In total, there are now 278 title recipients from 23 countries.
