Former Western Wines boss Mike Paul and Somerfield wine supremo Angela Mount have joined forces to form a new wine business consultancy.

Mount & Paul Wine Industry Solutions is aimed at helping both large and small businesses maximise the potential of their businesses through a range of consultancy services.

They hope their backgrounds and mix of skills will allow them to offer advice at all levels of the supply chain from the wines being made in vineyards right through to those on sale in shops and bars and restaurants.

Mount said: "We feel we can offer a one stop shop. For example for producers and brand owners who are looking to review their corporate strategy or their approach to difference markets, and for brand owners, distributors and retailers who may be questioning the relevance of their range and positioning of their wines."

Paul added: "We are in difficult times and there is going to be no room for slack. Companies need to be very sure what they need to be focused on."

They promise to be able to offer, quick, practical and pragmatic solutions to a businesses' needs. Be it a short business health check, management coaching for key staff or a full blown strategic overview.

Paul stressed that as a director of a company, Orbital Wines, that went into administration at this time last year, he has "been there and done it" and can use that experience to help others.

He said the economic situation also opened up opportunities for drinks companies which he said are full of entrepreneurial spirit. "Companies may actually find they are stronger than they think and can actually captitalise on the situation. It is all about adopting a balanced approach."

Mount agreed: "There will be plenty of opportunities for competitive gain. We believe we can help in fleshing out these opportunities."

Paul said the first quarter of 2008 is going to be vital for businesses to get their strategy and focus right. "We have the experience to be able to recognise and understand what issues companies are facing quickly."

Ultimately he said they could act as "a catalyst" working with companies to help them identify and seize the right opportunities for their business.

Mount and Paul will continue with their other work and this new venture would not conflict on those interests.
