Tesco has reported its worst Christmas sales performance since the last recesssion, as the discounters continue to make gains in the UK market.

The UK's number one retailer said its like-for-like sales growth for the seven weeks to January 10 was 2.5%, the lowest rate since 1993.

Its online and direct selling arms performed well, however, up 18% in total.

The Tesco figures are expected to be the worst of the big four multiples, with Sainsbury's having already reported a 4.5% rise and Morrisons expected to be up around 9%.

Meanwhile, Aldi reported a sales spike of 22% in December 2008 over the previous year.
