The makers of a vodka named after the rock legend Jimi Hendrix have been ordered by an American judge to withdraw it from sale and pay the musician's estate $3.2 million.

A trademark infringement suit was bought in 2007 by Experience Hendrix and Authentic Hendrix against vodka entrepreneur Craig Dieffenbach and his company Electric Hendrix Spirits, producer of the Hendrix Electric vodka brand.

The United States district court in Washington ordered Dieffenbach ad his company to pay damages for unlawful conduct and prohibited them from marketing Jimi Hendrix products in the future.

All distributors and licensees have been told to withdraw the vodka from sale and stop related marketing activity.

Janie Hendrix, chief executive officer of Experience Hendrix, said: "We are grateful that justice has been served.

"This judgment recognises our family's long-standing commitment to preserve the Jimi Hendrix legacy and artistic vision."
