Premium South African wine producer Vergelegen has appointed PLB its new UK distributor.

The deal takes effect in the off and on-trade from April 1, and replaces Vergelegen's existing agreement with Paragon.

Vergelegen's Premium Range retails at around £8 a bottle and the top-end Vergelegen V for £60.

PLB managing director Peter Darbyshire said: "South Africa is performing very well in the UK as it is the fastest growing top 10 country by volume and value, and we see this appointment as a great opportunity.

"Paragon has done a great job with Vergelegen, and we look forward to taking the brand to the next phase of its development. The wines are complementary to our portfolio, giving us a very strong, premium South Africa proposition to offer customers."

Stellenbosch-based Vergelegen has been voted the country's top winery by readers of South Africa's Wine Magazine for the past five years, and has a reputation for environmental and sustainable practices.
