The UK's annual vodka sales are likely to reach the £2 billion mark according to a new Mintel report.

The research company says other white spirits are failing to keep up with the rapid growth in vodka, which has seen value sales rise by 20% in five years. Gin grew just 2% over the same period.

"Vodka leads spirit sales and growth in the UK, pushing aside the recession and overall falling alcohol consumption," said senior consumer analyst Michelle Strutton.

"Strong appeal among young drinkers and both budget and premium growth are keeping the category buoyant during the economic downturn."

Mintel said that almost a quarter of 18- to 24-year-olds drink vodka, and one in 10 believe that high abv is a sign of good quality.

Sales of premium vodka have grown by more than 40% in two years.

Strutton added: "As vodka has moved upmarket, a shift has occurred, from consumption via shots or with mixers such as Coke or Red Bull, to more sophisticated cocktails and long serves."
