Diageo has broken the ground on the construction of a state-of-the-art rum distillery in the US Virgin Islands.

The project is a public-private initiative at St Croix and will supply rum for Captain Morgan-branded products for the US market.

David Gosnell, managing director for global supply and global procurement for Diageo, said: "We look forward to becoming part of the fabric of this community for many decades to come.

"The investment in, and development of, the project continues the tradition of Captain Morgan sourcing from the best rum stocks in the Caribbean and enhances Diageo's position in the global rum market."

Virgin Island governor John deJongh said the distillery was "a tremendous step forward for the economic development" of the territory.

Production will begin in 2011 and all Captain Morgan rum requirements for the US will be supplied from 2012.
