Sizzling summer temperatures and a renewed focus on food has boosted the performance of pub owners Greene King, the company has reported.

Like-for-like sales across outlets including Old English Inns and Hungry Horse rose by 5.2% in the eight weeks to June 28.

Greene King's shift towards food, which now accounts for more than a third of retail sales, and better weather have been pinpointed as reasons for the upturn in fortunes.

Chief executive Rooney Anand said that he was cautiously optimistic about the future, but warned that political and economic uncertainty in the UK could present difficulties.
