Exports of Scotch whisky grew by 1.5% in the first nine months of 2009, despite the global recession.

Volumes were up on the corresponding period in 2008 at 807 million bottles, though the value of export sales dipped by 3.5% on the previous industry record set in 2008.

The total value of exports of £2.1 billion was still the second best performance on record.

Gavin Hewitt, chief executive off the Scotch Whisky Association, said: "Distillers have been resilient through the recession, investing for future opportunities and underscoring Scotch whisky's increasing importance to the domestic economy."

Within Scotch's top 10 export markets, the value of shipments to France, South Africa and Venezuela increased.
Sales to the US, Spain and South Korea fell.
