Chablis winners announced

Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:48
The winners of the annual Chablis Wine Contest, covering the 2007 and 2008 vintages, have been announced.

The competition encompassed 348 samples from four appellation and 75 independent judges, comprising oenologists, restaurateurs, sommeliers, wine producers and journalists from across the world.

The wines of the previous year's harvest (2008 vintage for the 2010 competition) were presented for the Petit Chablis, Chablis and Chablis Premier Cru categories and the wines from three years of harvest before the competition (2007) for the Grand Crus.

Arnaud Valour, head of marketing and communication for Chablis wines said: "This event remains the opportunity to honour the best Chablis wines and to demonstrate the diversity of its appellations."

He added: "For the Grand Crus, 2007 really is a strong year, as it was difficult to decide on the winners. 2007 gave rise to wines which will improve over time. With an incisive freshness and good substance, they hint at a wonderful potential for ageing, expressing over time all the wealth of the Kimmeridgian soil and thus the typical character of the Chablis terroir.

"And the 2008 vintage reveals more tender notes – the fruit is in perfect harmony with the minerality - like perfect little sweets."

The winners (gold medals) were: Petit Chablis 2008: Stéphanie et Vincent Michelet, Montigny la Resle; Chablis 2008: Roland Lavantureux, Lignorelles; Chablis Premier Cru, Rive Gauche, 2008: Domaine de la Tour, Monts-Mains, Lignorelles; Chablis Premier Cru, Rive Droite, 2008: Domaine J. Collet et Fils, Mont de Tonnerre, Chablis; Chablis Grand Cru 2007: Domaine Laroche, Les Blanchots, Chablis.
