The port industry is mourning the loss of former Croft managing director Robin Reid OBE at the age of 89.

Reid joined Croft in 1948 after serving in the British army during and after World War II.

He became managing director of the company in 1957 and was later appointed chairman of the Croft group's companies in Portugal and Spain.

Working with future Portuguese prime minister Francisco Sá Carneiro, Reid was responsible for the establishment of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto in 1963 and went on to play a key part in the revival of the traditional barcos rebelo boats on the Douro after organising the first annual regatta on the river. The event is now a popular date on the port industry calendar.

He was also a founder of the Circulo do Infante Dom Henrique to promote business in northern Portugal and a director of Associacão Comercial do Porto.

He was later vice-president of the Anglo Portuguese Chamber of Commerce.

Reid was awarded the OBE in 1983 and was made a Commander of the Order of Merit of Industry & Agriculture in Portugal and a Commander of the Order of Merit in Italy.

He is survived by his wife Elsa, daughters Olga, Wendy, Joanna and Christian, and six grandchildren.
