Ramón Bilbao reveals "more daring" look for Altura Tempranillo Garnacha

Published:  08 March, 2017

Bodegas Ramón Bilbao is poised to unveil a new look for its Viñedos de Altura Tempranillo Garnacha at this year's Wines from Spain tasting taking place in London tomorrow.

The updated label, which features a red and black colour scheme, echoes the core Ramón Bilbao range, paying homage to the adventurous spirit of founder Ramón Bilbao.

UK manager Kirsty Loftus described the new look as "more daring", and said it reflected how Viñedos de Altura was always looking at its region with fresh eyes.

"On paper, grapes from two very different terroirs in different areas of Rioja, but in practice with a major unifying factor - altitude - to bring freshness and elegance to the wine," she said.

The new label with its red and black colour scheme was a "bold move" from a traditional wine region, added Loftus.

Last month, Ramón Bilbao announced that it had joined forces with premium supplier Enotria&Coe to take its portfolio to the UK off and on-trade.

According to Nielsen, Ramón Bilbao is the number one Rioja brand in the Spanish on-trade (7.8% market share), and one of the fastest growing Rioja brands in the off-trade (up 29%).

The revamp follows Bodegas Ramón Bilbao, founded in Haro by Ramón in 1924, giving its Riojas a makeover in November 2015 as part of a wider 'Where The Journey Begins' campaign for the portfolio.

All the family-owned winery's wines will be available to taste at Wines from Spain, including the 'classic' Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva trio, the Rueda white wines, plus the Edición Limitada and Mirto single vineyard blends and the new Lalomba Rosado 2016 - the new vintage of this first release from the 'dream parcel' of vines high in the Yerga Mountain range in Rioja Baja purchased by Ramón Bilbao in 2015.

Also on show will be the Rias Baixas wines from sister producer Mar de Frades: the Albariño 2016, Finca Valiñas 2014 and Mar de Frades Brut Nature NV in their distinctive blue bottles.
