The Penny Blue super premium Mauritian rum is to receive its first cask release outside the island.

Penny Blue Cask #28 was distilled in 2006 and has an abv of 44.8%. The release is limited to 197 bottles.

It is the fifth release under the Penny Blue brand. The previous four XO batches were highly sought after by collectors.

Penny Blue is produced by the Indian Ocean Rum Company, a joint venture between Berry Bros & Rudd and the Medine Distillery.

The Medine Distillery is a single estate rum producer, growing all its own sugar cane. It was founded in 1926 and is the oldest operation distillery on the island.

The Penny Blue brand was launched earlier this year. It is named after the world's rarest stamp.

It has already been awarded gold by Spirits Business.

Penny Blue's small cask releases are hand-picked by Jean Francois Koenig, master distiller at the Medine Distillery and Doug McIvor from Berry Bros & Rudd.

Koenig said: "We have selected a really exceptional cask for this special single cask edition; the rum is rich and luxuriant. We are exceedingly proud of this single cask and are working on new innovations for future releases from the well-received Penny Blue series."

Penny Blue Cask #28 will retail exclusively from the Berry Bros & Rudd shop and Coe Vintners. It has an RRP of £140.
