Tesco trials mixed-case South African wine offer

Tesco is to trial mixed cases of wine from its finest* range in 280 stores nationwide for the first time.

The trial involves a pre-mixed case of four South African wines: the Stellenbosch Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Chenin Blanc 2015, Malbec 2015 and Shiraz 2015.

All have an RRP of £5.50. The four-bottle finest* South African selection case, however, will cost £16.50, offering shoppers a total saving of £5.50.

The Sauvignon Blanc and the Shiraz are IWC Commended, while the Chenin Blanc was awarded an IWC silver medal.

Dawn Webster-Smith, Tesco's wine-buying manager for South Africa, said: "To help customers explore the delights of South African wine at terrific prices, we have put together this great selection of finest*wines.

"The smaller mixed-case offers shoppers outstanding value and more importantly a cross section of the range that really showcases some of the fantastic wines coming from South Africa at the moment.

"We are lucky to be working with renowned wine makers: Adi Badenhorst and Hermias Hugo, both dedicated to providing our customers with outstanding quality finest* wines at a great price."

The mixed-case trial will be available from March 23. Each case will include tasting notes alongside the four bottles.

The beer, wines and spirits category is a rare growth area in Tesco, which has suffered with the other Big Four multiple retailers from the advance of Aldi and Lidl.

Year-on-year BWS sales at Tesco were up 2.4% by value and 3.7% by volume during the Christmas trading period last year.

Overall sales at Tesco have been in decline for two years, with the most recent Nielsen data - for the 12 weeks to February 27 - showing a 0.5% fall.

Aldi launched an online wine retail service earlier this year, offering six-bottle cases of over 90 different wines from around the world.
