Tuscan producer Piccini has launched a new addition to its range of Chianti wines available in the UK Off-Trade. The Piccini Chianti Superiore DOCG 2006 will retail in Sainsbury's at £6.99.
Still considered relatively 'new', the Superiore classification (introduced in 1996) allows producers to select grapes from vineyards throughout the whole Chianti production area while vinifying the wines according to the same stringent rules applied to Chianti Classico.
“Through our vineyards and long-term contracts with experienced growers, we have access to around 250 hectares of high quality grapes throughout the region so Chianti Superiore is really the perfect classification for us,” comments Piccini's Export & Marketing Director Martina Piccini.
“It also enables consumers who recognise the Chianti 'brand', but do not necessarily understand all the different grades, to immediately grasp the quality of the wine in the bottle.”
Family-owned and run, Piccini has been making classic Chianti wines in the heart of the Tuscan countryside for over 120 years and today is responsible for up to 12% of the entire region's production.
The Piccini Chianti Superiore DOCG 2006 - made from 100% Sangiovese - spent 6 months ageing in French oak barrels and at least 3 months in bottle before release.
