Nicky Burston, director and founder of World Wine Agencies, is an importer, distributor and broker of New World wines with clients such as the Co-op, P & O World Cruises, Whitbread and a number of key independent wholesalers and retailers throuout the UK.
No stranger to the world of wine, Burston the co-founder and director’s career has spanned fifteen years in a blue chip sales and marketing background working for Diageo and Robert Mondavi.
Burston is the sole sales person, and since opening World Wine Agencies in 2006 she has won Entrepreneur of the Year 2007, in the South West Regional Business Awards.
Based on gut instinct, Burston’s says: “ l’ll only buy wine I know I can sell, only sell wine I know I would drink, and I’ll only do business with people I like.
These three simple strategies seem to have worked for her so far and she adds: “WWA wine range speaks for itself in gaining new business and it’s always important to always go the extra mile for people and our wine range.”
Her specialist areas are premium entry level, “never the cheapest and not boutique, but fine wines for a wider market.”
World Wine Agencies will also be launching two new off-trade agencies this month. Silverado Winery, a premium winery from Napa, and Travesia from Chile. “Beautifully crafted, yet exceptionally priced, these wines offer an exciting and exclusive new alternative for restaurants,” says Burston. The varietals due to land in July are Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Carmenere, and Chardonnay, priced at £3.95 per bottle.
Aiming to deliver good quality wines for the price is her objective and Burston says her entry level Californian wines are popular with the on trade and La Chamiza, and her Polo range from Argentina are hugely successful.
“I also love working with Von Buhl, they are such a great Estate with a rare balance of heritage and history and innovation, they’re also young thinking and I consider it an honour to represent them.”
