Aldi launches fine wine range with budget price tag after being named the UK’s fifth largest supermarket
Aldi is moving up in the world.
The German discounter, which last week was revealed to be the UK’s fifth largest grocer, announced it is expanding its alcohol offering by launching a new ‘fine wine’ range.
It is however not entirely deserting its cut-price roots, as each wine in the 12-strong range retail for £8 or under.
Launching today, the range is available in store and online as part of its Spring Wine Festival.
Last week, data from Kantar Worldpanel revealed that Aldi had moved into fifth place on the list of the UK’s largest supermarkets, growing from its place at number ten a decade ago – and nudging Co-op into sixth place.
Christmas 2016 was the grocer’s most successful Christmas to date, selling more than 13.5m bottles of wine, Champagne and Prosecco in December.
Mo Sisters Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon
This morning, the company said it wanted to build on its reputation for offering “outstanding quality wines at unbeatable prices” with the range of new wines, many of which were sourced from wineries which have existing relationships with Aldi.
Wines include BX Crémant de Bordeaux Rosé, RRP £7.99; Bonfleur Languedoc Reserve 2011, £6.99 from the team which work with Aldi to create their Vignobles Roussellet range; and Mo Sisters Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, £6.99.
“There is a real appetite from our ever-growing customer base to try wines with a great story and provenance, providing the perfect excuse to introduce this exciting range,” Tony Baines joint managing director for corporate buying said.
