Vindependents adds Mountford Estate to its portfolio

Published:  07 March, 2018

Vindependents has added Mountford Estate from New Zealand’s Waipara region to its portfolio.

Available from Vindependents with immediate effect, Mountford Estate is a boutique winery producing just 5,000 cases of wine from 10 ha of vineyard.

With its reputation as one of New Zealand’s “finest wine producers”, Mountford Estate was a “perfect fit” for Vindependents, said Jessica Hutchinson, founder and managing director.

“We are delighted to be working with such a world class producer as Mountford Estate. Our members, who are as passionate about the wines they sell as the winemakers themselves, are the best placed people in the UK to be selling hand-crafted wines such as these," she said.

While the flagship wines of the estate were the Burgundian styles Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay, the aromatic white wines had carved out a very healthy reputation across the globe, she added.

"The vineyards are planted on steep slopes formed from clay over limestone and marl which are protected from the ocean breezes giving a climate ideal for the production of cool climate wines," she said.

In 2017, the winery was bought by Koyama Wines - headed by Takahiro Koyama, who had previously been making wines under the Koyama label.

Last month, Vinbdependents saw two of its early members – The Oxford Wine Company and Corks Out, pull out of the buying group, which is owned by independent wine merchants.
