31Dover director Jay Swanborough resigns

Published:  14 January, 2019

Jay Swanborough, director of ecommerce, operations and marketing for 31Dover, has resigned.

Leaving the online retail business with immediate effect Swanborough, who joined the start-up in 2014, said he had left the company to “pursue new marketing and distribution opportunities in the drinks sector”.

Swanborough’s resignation follows several 31Dover departures in recent months, including the finance director in November alongside departures from the marketing team.

Thanking Swanborough for his contribution, chief executive officer James Bagley told Harpers: “In any ambitious, growing business, some staff turnover is natural. As we continue to expand our brand partnerships, data proposition, on-trade platform and subscriptions like The Gin Club and Clara Wine, we will look to build the right team and capability in the business.”

As part of this, 31Dover had recently appointed a new head of buying and head of on-trade sales alongside a head of partnerships and a data scientist among others, he added.

31Dover launched what it claims to be the UK’s first data-led technology wine subscription service in October – Clara Wine, in a bid to ensure customers only receive wines that closely match their tastes and preferences.

The service works by visitors filling out a short quiz designed by Carmel Kilcline MW to explore the world of flavour, aroma and taste after which the results are processed using an algorithm which places customers into one of twelve distinct ‘wine tribes’ to help determine their final wine selection.
