Burgundy overtakes Bordeaux as most traded region

Published:  12 August, 2026

According to new analysis from Liv-ex, Burgundy has overtaken Bordeaux as the most traded wine region by value in a single month, for the first time since 2022.

The region has seen a significant increase in trade over the past decade, while Bordeaux has stagnated.

This comes as the Liv-ex Burgundy 150 Index – which tracks the price performance of the ten most recent vintages from 15 key Burgundies – comes to rest at its 2019 peak. Liv-ex said that supply and demand have reached a new equilibrium at this price level.

The wine investment platform added that now would be a good time for collectors and investors to consider Burgundy’s top names, despite the mid-range remaining under pressure.

Sophia Gilmour, the market analyst who wrote the report, explained: “Taking the bid/offer ratios of Burgundy (beyond the 150) by price bracket, we can see a clear distinction between demand for the region's top wines versus those on the market below £5,000/12x75.

“Though there has been a slight increase in demand for Burgundy under £5,000/12x75, supply (as proxied by value of offers) appears to be ever-expanding. The notable exceptions here are the better-known white wines in this price range.”

Burgundy’s increasing market share and rising bid/offer ratio are the result of rising demand for top tier Burgundy producers – with a third of Burgundy trade in July accounted for by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Ramonet, Leflaive and d'Auvenay alone.

With the rarity of these wines sometimes restricting the amount of trading that can occur, Liv-ex also looks at auctions to gage the market’s direction of travel – in this case pointing to increased volume of auctions at similar and rising prices as confirmation of this trend.

Among mid-range wines, the analysis concluded that supply far outstrips demand, meaning the category will have to fall further before its recovery.

The UK has historically been the largest buyer base for Burgundy, although its share of demand somewhat contracted through 2025.

British buyers have reclaimed some of this market share this year, accounting for 58% of Burgundy bid exposure and 44% of traded value.
