Harpers Top 50 Sommeliers 2026
Our Top 50 Sommeliers list is a celebration of the incredible talent behind the equally impressive collective and individual drinks offers across the UK’s world-class restaurant scene. As such, it digs much deeper than the drinks list alone, with our judges contemplating many facets of the sommelier role, from service and staff training to innovation and commercial acumen. Appropriateness of the overall offer for the venue and its guests is also a major factor.
This is why a head somm from a three Michelin star fine-dining establishment with a traditional-leaning tome may end up sitting cheek by jowl with a rival from a more casual eatery. Attention to detail is the name of the game and ‘quality’ is the watchword in all.
Given the calibre of those who make it on to our readership-nominated long list, this makes the judging of the final 50 and their placements particularly exacting and, on occasion, challenging. This, however, is a good problem to have, testifying not just to the hugely talented pool of wine professionals in sommelier roles, but also the rich spread of enticing dining and drinking oases up and down the UK.
