Ex-Allied boss takes directorial role at Berry's

Published:  23 July, 2008

Philip Bowman has been appointed as a non-executive director of London wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd.

The former Allied Domecq chief executive will maintain the position in tandem with heading up ScottishPower, and a non-executive position with Scottish & Newcastle, Britain's largest brewer.

I wanted to maintain a link with the wine industry, and could only work for a company in a sector in which I am interested,' said Bowman.

Bowman insists that he has not been brought in to sell the company off: It is highly profitable and will remain a family business,' he said.

There will always be a profitable niche for smaller specialists such as Berry Bros. We don't want to compete with Tesco, but customers are not satisfied with part-deliveries from supermarkets.'
