Sparkling wine helps push up online sales by 11% in first quarter of 2015 says WDR

Published:  14 September, 2015

The value of online wine sales rose 11% in the first quarter of 2015 according to analysis by the Wilson Drinks Report.

Volumes sold online increased by 9% over the same period.

WDR managing director Tim Wilson said: "The sparkling wine surge has continued into 2015, with total sparkling wine value up 16%.

"Not only have sales of Italian wine grown strongly, we have also seen a massive jump in sales of other French sparkling wine other than Champagne. Both Champagne and Cava, however, saw sales fall back 5% in Q1.

"Still wine also had a strong quarter with volumes up 8% and value up 10%, a welcome boost for the wine industry where sales continue to be tough across the more established on- and off-trade channels.

"What is interesting is how the shape of online sales is markedly different to sales through supermarkets."

The Wilson Drinks Report collects EPOS sales data from many leading specialist online wine retailers in the UK, including Tesco Wine by the Case, Majestic, Waitrose Cellar, The Wine Society, Marks & Spencer and Laithwaite's.

Wilson added: "There is no guesswork, no modelling, no extrapolation in our reports, only real data."
